Setting up a work space in your home doesn’t have to cost much if you plan it right.  Here are some great ideas for DIY office furniture for small spaces.

Once you’ve decided the space in your house for your home office, the first thing you will need to look for is a chair and a desk you will be working on. These are the two essential items for your home office space.

If there is not an extra table or desk around that you can use for this, you may at least have an extra chair that is available to use for your home office.  Deciding the right available and comfortable chair to use is important as it will be your basis for the height of your DIY desk.

DIY Office Furniture for Small Spaces: Desk Option 1

For your desk, check your garage or storage area for items that can be useful.  Look for wooden crates or boxes that you can stack (sideways to also serve as shelves) into two columns. The columns must be high enough to serve as support legs for your desk.

Next, look for a wood plank (or planks attached together) or a piece of plywood. Make sure that it is a good size for a desk top.  If you have all of these available, follow these DIY steps:

  1. Place the stacked crates (or wooden boxes) where you plan to have your desk.
  2. Set them apart with enough space for your chair and leg room for when you sit there to work.
  3. Once your stacked crates are in place, all you need to do is place the wooden plank on top of them to serve as the desk top. Then, your desk is ready for use.

If you want this to be a sturdier set up, you can either glue them all together. You may also screw the top plank to the crates. Remember to use only small and thin screws for that.

DIY Office Furniture for Small Spaces: Desk Option 2

If you have extra door or cabinet hinges lying around in your storage, you can use these to make another sturdier version of Option 1.  Using the hinges, attach the top of the desk to the wall of the area where you plan to place the desk. Do this by following these steps:

  1. Put the whole desk set up together by the wall where you will be attaching the desk top.
  2. Screw one side of each of the hinges onto the wall underneath the top of the desk. Make sure that the hinges are evenly spaced apart.
  3. Next, attach the other side of each of the hinges to the bottom of the desk top. Do this in such a way that it will hang vertically with its side adjacent to the wall when the wooden crates are removed.

With this set up, you can also free the space for other use whenever you are not using the desk.  Do this by simply lifting the whole plank to its horizontal position. Just remember to replace the crates underneath for leg support whenever you will use the desk set up again.

DIY Office Furniture for Small Spaces: Desk Option 3

If you don’t have wooden crates or boxes, check for other options. You can also use either bar stools, side tables, or small office cabinets to serve as support legs. These can serve as materials for both Options 1 and 2.  The ones with drawers will be best to use as they can also serve to store your needed office materials.

DIY Office Shelves

Since it’s always best to have shelves in your work space, check if you have more wooden crates or boxes that you can glue and stack together sideways. These can serve as extra shelves for your office books and other materials.  If you have long wooden planks, that can also work. Try to get brackets that you can use to attach them to a wall in your work space.  You may need to cut these to a more preferable length that will go well with your work space.

Make sure you do any needed painting on the materials for your DIY desk and shelves first. Complete all painting tasks before you attach the materials to the walls and finalize your set up.

Home Office Finishing Touches and Accessories

If you have the budget for it, you can also make a better work space ambience by having a good office themed wall paper. An appropriate and space-brightening office wallpaper will help your brain to switch and it’s pleasing to the eyes.

We talked about chairs you can use for the workspace. Sometimes, you need a real, suitable office chair that’s designed for long hours of desk work. If you must buy, you could opt for maximum comfort to increase productivity. A fantastic option is this ergonomic desk chair with lumbar support.

Buying foldable office desks is also another option. This is a ready solution for those who don’t have time nor the materials to the DIY builds we mentioned above. Choose compact designs that give good support to all the stuff you’ll be placing on top of the work desk.

Enjoying Your Workspace

It may not look and feel like your usual office, but in time, your mind and focus will adjust to the new routine and surroundings. Having some outside view may be good, so consider that when you decide where you will hold your home office space.

Monitor ventilation and odor. A good breathing space is essential to the enjoyment of your workspace. It’s hard to function when the room feels cramped or smells musty or stale.

Lastly, wherever you decide to do your office work, make sure it’s in an area that has less distractions and where people don’t often access. That way you can concentrate more.

Final Thoughts

The house office adjustment may be difficult at first. But with several attempts, you can achieve a good harmony between home life and work schedules. Choose a specific place and find materials you can fit nicely into that space. Remember to opt with retractable or foldable setups, especially if you plan to reclaim the space after work hours are done.
